10 March 2010 - The Superstitious Person’s Guide to Planting Herbs and Flowers

Who should plant the lavender?

The man of the house should always plant the lavender bush. If a woman plants lavender, it may bring bad luck to the household. The lavender we call English lavender is the best lavender to plant. In France, the name for English lavender is French lavender. The lavender we call French lavender is Anglaise lavender in France. If you move to France, the man of the house should plant French lavender in the garden.

Who should plant the herbs?

It does not matter who plants the herbs. Either the husband or the wife may plant the herbs. Some herbs will grow best in the garden if the wife is the more dominant partner in the marriage. For example, parsley, sage, and rosemary will all flourish in the garden if the wife is the dominant partner. Perhaps the husband should remain ignorant of this fact if all three herbs are growing exceptionally well.

Encourage Bees and Crickets to come into your Home and Garden

A bee will bring good luck into your home if it flies indoors. It is important you do not kill the bee because your luck will turn from good to bad when a bee dies inside your home.

In early times people believed bees could comprehend human speech. If anything of importance happens to your family, pass this information along to the bees in your garden. Contented bees will ensure your garden is beautiful and your plants will thrive.

A cricket coming into your home will bring good fortune. A cricket in your home may protect you from the evil influence of fairies. Maybe this superstition is behind the Charles Dickens story ‘The Cricket on the Hearth’.

Plant a Secret Garden

Every flower has a meaning. By choosing to plant particular flowers in your garden, you may be able to bring good luck into your garden. Planting marigolds means you have a desire for riches, the daisy is for innocence, the gardenia is for joy, and the daffodil is for chivalry. Holly will bring domestic happiness.

It is fun to follow superstitious beliefs and traditions. Many courting couples in Victorian times relied on the language of flowers to tell one another of their love. In today’s modern society, there is no need for such elaborate means of conveying your love, however to plant a secret garden can be a joy to the owner.

Each herb also has its own meaning. Parsley means useful, rosemary means remembrance, and sage means wisdom, great respect, and female fidelity. It is interesting to note that although the woman who successfully grows sage is the dominant marriage partner she is also faithful to her spouse.

Safeguard your Home with Houseleeks, Holly, and Elder

To safeguard your home, you should plant houseleeks on the walls or the roof of your home. Houseleeks will protect your home against thunder and lightning.

Holly is another plant that will protect your home against thunder and lightning. Holly also protects you against having nightmares.

Elder will protect your home against lightening. The elder tree will also protect you against evil spirits, however you must not prune or cut your elder tree after dark or you will attract the evil spirits to your home.

So in summary, make sure the man of the family plants the lavender. Plant parsley, sage, and rosemary and see if they flourish in your garden. Plant a secret garden for a little Victorian romance and if you are afraid of storms, plant houseleeks, holly, or elder. It does not matter if you are superstitious, you can create a beautiful garden.
